editing middle page photogaraphs

Firstly I used the quick select tool to make new layer, so I can edit the drum kit without the background.

Through the clear plastic in the drum kit, the       music room classroom was still visible. Meaning  that the illusion of the band being in a studio or  performance would be effected. So by quick      selecting this area and making a new layer, I      could adjust the brightness and contrast to           make the school posters look less visible but to resemble similar to reflections of the drum kit.

To make the image easier to edit, I used the cropping tool to make the image smaller so I could focus more on the drum kit.

I clicked on to the layer of the drum kit and adjusted the warmth, saturation, brightness and highlights in the  image. I did this because it will make the image stand out more, also the vibrancy of the image will be more welcoming to the reader and this page of the magazine will be read by more people.

Finally, I wanted to cut out the background, so by hiding that layer, I was able to see the background that was visible when I quick selected the image. Therefore by using the rubber tool, I erased the parts of the image that I didn't want to be seen. This gave the image a more finished and professional look.

Firstly, I turned the models and the guitar in to separate layers, So I could edit the tone of the picture separately.
For the guitar, I wanted the guitar to be eye catching by adjusting the colour.
I wanted there to be less of a contrast in the guitar so the reflection of the light would be less obvious. This would make the picture look more professional. Also, I wanted to make the instrument brighter so it would stand out more against the models black clothing.

Then I adjusted the warmth and brightness of the models so they stand out more. Using the          stamp tool and the blur tool, I cleared their skin   of any spots or uneven skin tone to make the photograph look professional.

I decided to use the stamp tool to edit the white background because the backdrop was dirty fro past photo shoots. So by clearing the dirt it made the background look cleaner and more professional.

In addition, the backdrop was still dirty, so using the blur tool, I could use a variety of blurring textures to blend the background so it looks cleaner.

editing contents page photographs

Firstly I imported the picture and used the cropping toll to cut out the unwanted background, so there would be more focus on the models. Then I used the quick select tool to make the models into a new layer.
Then to make the edges tidy, I used the erase tool to rub out any remaining visible back ground. This means that the Picture will look more neat and professional once adjusted and edited, because if I decide to include the background, any parts that were included in this layer will be different from the rest of the background and this will make the photograph look poorly edited.
After I turned it into a new layer, I adjusted the tone of the models. I made them look warmer, had a larger contrast and gave the image more saturation. The effect of these adjustments is that the image will introduce to the reader a friendly atmosphere because warmer tones traditionally remind people of summer with a positive influence.

Additionally, I wasn't happy with the models clothes as they did not stand out. Therefore, I made the clothes into a new layer and adjusted their tone.
I made the contrast greater and made them more saturated so the clothes would compliment their skin complexion more. Also, the clothes adjustments meant that they stood out against the models faces so it directed the attention on the reader towards their facial expressions. The effect of this is that the reader will be more intrigued in the bands image and are then more likely to read the article in the magazine.
In addition, I wanted to make the models eyes stand out in order to make eye contact to the reader.  Therefore I wanted to enhance the models eyes by modifying the colour balance. With this I could make their eye colour warmer or colder. However, I made their eye colour brighter so they would standout and I made the colour of them warmer so they would match the tone of the rest of their bodies.
Furthermore, since I had changed the clothes of the models to appear darker in comparison to their skin, I adjusted the models hair to match the darkness with the clothes. The effect of this is that the dark tone acts as a border to direct the attention of the reader around the models faces; as the faces of the models will immediately get most attention.
I was not happy with the background because dirt and mud, from previous photo shoots, was visible. So, in order to make a cleaner and neater background, I used the stamp tool to erase large marks. This meant that the dirt is less obvious- making the picture look more professional.

Finally, adding to the background, I wanted to make it warmer to match the same tone as the models. This means that it is less obvious that the models have been photoshopped and makes the picture, as a whole, look more natural.

For the next photograph, I wanted the model to    look like a female soul singer to add to older atmosphere of the magazine. I made the model  wear a red blouse, to have painted her nails red and to also wear a red lipstick. This is because the prop had a red lead so the colours would reflect of each other to make a border and direct the readers attention. Additionally, the colour red is traditionally a provocative colour so will get more attention.
I had already made the model in to a new layer and edited the tone of her to make her warmer.
So I decided to adjust her hair by making is more saturated, the effect of this is that it will match the tone of the rest of her body.

As the model was wearing a variety of red, I decided to make the colours match so the effect would be greater. I did this by adjusting each red layer with the image adjustment format, and made them warmer, more highlighted and have greater saturation. I did this so it will also match the tone of the rest of her body.

editing front cover picture

Firstly when editing my front cover image on photoshop I needed to use the crop tool to cut out some of the background, in order to focus more on the models.

Once I'd cropped my photograph, I used the
quick selection tool to torn the models in to a new layer.  After this, to get a finer edge around the models, I used the rubber and changed its size to rub out any background that was visible in the picture.

As soon as I was happy with the edges around      the models. I wanted to edit the warmth,     brightness and saturation of the image.
Therefore I selected the layer of the
 models and hovered
the mouse over 'Image' and scrolled down
 to 'Adjustments,'
where a list of things to change were available.

Once editing the tone, I decided to remove any marks on the models skin and on the white          background. I did this by using the stamp tool to make the picture look more professional.

Also, I added a gradient to enhance the light direction included in the high angle I used for this picture. This means that the picture will stand out more and the white title that will be included will contrast more against the picture.
Additionally, it will give more of a mysterious effect that adds to the serious facial expressions the models are showing. This means that the reader will be interested in the band as they will want to know why the magazine has portrayed                                                                                          the band in this way.

middle page skeleton diagrams

The first design I made includes a large photograph that would spread through a large percentage of the page as this will get most attention. An example of this is the article titles 'Magic and Loss.'
Then I decided to put a quote in the middles of the text, so the text will act like a border causing the reader to acknowledge the quote, making them more interested in the article. After this, I put a photograph at the top right hand corner so not all of the main features are on the left page. The effect of this is that the pages wont look too crowded. Also, I decided to put the text around it so it will direct the readers eye's into looking at the photograph.

For the second diagram, I only included one photograph so I could include more text. In the middle pages I analysed, they included lots of writing and information. So I wanted to see if the page would look professional if it includes lots of information. I would display a bordered section on the right page because the information I would put in here would stand out against the rest of the page, meaning more attention would be paid too it.  The article regarding Jimi Hendrix uses this effectively. Also, it means that not all the main features are on the left page causing it to be busy.

For the last page, I again included a large photograph that would cover the majority of the double page spread. Then I decided to put the Title in the middle of the top half of the page because it makes the reader's eye's draw to both of the pages. I decided not to use a quote on this page because  I have used lots of quotes on the other parts of my magazine and I don't want it to become repetitive and boring. Also, I put a picture on the right hand page too spread the features of the magazine out, so the page does not get too crowded or busy.
I put a large piece of text underneath the picture, as this is where the interview of the article would be.   This is presented in the article that presents Billy Gibbons that inspired me.The effect of having so much space for the interview emphasis to the reader the amount of relation and effort the artists puts in to the article; making the reader want to read more.

Middle page analysis

This magazine middle page features many images of a band that the article is discussing, they are mainly in the top part of the left page. The page is presented in this way to grab more attention as the reader will be able to see the band members in the images. In the photographs, their outfits consist of performing in a western fashion (in black and white), formal clothing and a coloured image of them performing. These images are presented as they contrast against each other so they stand out in order to grab the readers attention.

The article is presented in paragraphs, the most important part of the paragraph is in bold in order catch the readers eye, so they know what the article is about.  As the article is in set paragraphs, they act as a border to present the other features included on the page. This means that the the readers attention on directed into where the editor wants them to look. Between the paragraphs two quotes are included in a large text and in a different font so it will stand out. But it also includes a shape of cows head and stars on either side. The cows head links to the western theme displayed in the images, but it is in the colour red because it stands out against the white and black writing. Additionally, the stars are rating that other people have judged the band to be. This is displayed because it will instantly tell the reader the quality of the bands music and give them an idea of what the article is about.

In addition, an extra paragraph has been included on the far side of the right page. It is displayed in a black box to make it separate from the rest of the page. The effect of this is that it stands out from the rest of the double page spread.

This middle page spread shows an image that covers one of the double page spread to catch the majority of the readers attention. The picture shows the musicians posing in a river; the women is shown naked, whereas the man is displayed in formal wear. The contrast in their costumes will intrigue the reader because they will want to know why they are presented so differently.

A quote is given on the bottom, right hand side of the page to give the reader some information of the article. The text is given in the colour white to make it visible from the background. However, it also complements the adjacent page; this is because the page is white, matching the quote. The effect of this is that it will direct the readers eyes towards the quote, which is where the editor wants the reader to look.

The title 'Magic and Loss' uses a different font from the text and is in the shape of a semi-circle. This is because is makes is stand out from the rest of the page and it is the first thing that the readers see. Also, the use of stars are used around the title' this is to emphasis the idea of 'magic' in the article. However, it links to the quote displayed on the right page as this also has star shapes around it.

These pages are discussing the singer 'Jimmy Hendrix.' On the left hand side of the left page, a border is included to bring the readers attention towards the article and image; this is done to persuade the readers to read the article. In addition, it compliments the right page as it also features a block shape in the colour black. This means that the border and this shape reflect of each other and it directs the reader what to read. The editor has done this as they want the reader to acknowledge the information presented in the black areas of the page.

A large title in the middle of the double page reads, 'Are You Experienced?' It is displayed in black because it is the opposite colour of the background, this means it will standout. It is across the middle of the pages because it brakes the traditional structure of a middle page in a magazine. More often than not, the title is as the top of the left page. The effect of this is that the it will grab more attention because it contrasts to the rest of the pages.

A colour scheme of red, black and white is included to influence the reader's eyes and direct them where to look as the colours dramatically reflect of each other. The subtitle 'Hendrix' is in the colour red to show the importance of Jimmy Hendrix; if the reader is not aware of who this is, they will be interested in the article because they will want to know who 'Hendrix' is and why he has power.

contents page skeleton diagram

The first skeleton diagram is over a double page because I preferred the double page spreads in my analysis of magazine content pages. This is because more information and photographs can be included within the page.I have also used a badge to give additional information, the result of a badge is that it will grab the attention of he reader, this can be seen in 'Classis Rock's' contents page. However, I felt as though circular badges look more professional as they look neater in comparison to more unusual shaped badges.
I put the context on either side of each page so it acts as a border, this means that the writing also helps direct the reader to look at the pictures and badges, this means that the techniques used on the page will increasingly grab the readers attention and tell them what is in the magazine. Moreover, as the writing is on either side of the page meaning that it is clear to read as it is away from any other techniques included. Through all of the skeleton diagrams, I have put a title of the top of each page that will able 'content,' so it is clear to all readers that this page will give them the content information.

The second skeleton is a single content page like the contents page from the magazine 'UNCUT.' I've designed this as his means not very much will be on the page making it very simple. This means it will be effective because there will be one large picture to grab maximum attention, instead of many techniques that would make the page busy. Also, I've put the content of the edge of the page because if the magazine was folded, it would still be clear to see the content and it is obvious to see that this writing is the content.

The last skeleton diagram is also a double page spread, however, only two large images are used, like in 'Classic Rock's' magazine. As a result, other techniques such as badges wont be necessary to grab the readers attention. Unlike the fist diagram, the content is on the right hand side on the page. This means that the pages have matching structure and it will look professional. Also, if the magazine was folded it would still be clear to read the contents. However, the left hand side of the page would be less easy to read, so it would be more clear to put the content of he let side of the left page.

contents page conclusion

After analysing rock and roll magazine content pages, I have decided how I want to design my contents page for my magazine.

Firstly, I discovered that I prefer double page spreads than single page because the structure of the page mean that more can be put on the pages. Therefore, more photographs and titles can be included to allude the reader about what in the magazine. As a result the reader would become more interested in certain articles and the pictures in the page will hint to them what is in the article.

In addition, I think that a colour scheme of three colours would work best to compliment the page. This is because the colours reflect of each other, therefore they would direct the reader in to what is most important on the page. Therefore the reader definitely knows what I want them to see.  I think three main colours would work best because it will not crowd the magazine page; but it will still make it bright but also neat. Furthermore, as the readers will remember the colour scheme, in future issues they will remember past issues. Also, when seeing these colours they will be reminded about the issue, this will spread the popularity of the magazine.

The use of picture is one of the most effective ways to grab the readers eye because it instantly gives the reader an idea of what the contents of the page is about.  One way to get the attention of the reader is to make the model with in the picture look directly in to the camera. This means that the eye contact will force the reader to look at this picture. As a result, the reader will then see the other factors used on the page and will begin to be intrigued and read the magazine.
On the other hand, I think that the use of one main image will get most attention as it will be the largest element of the page. Usually, the image has a relation to something that has been popular recently. So, people will be interested in the picture as it is something that the majority of the public are aware of.
In addition, the use of small images help get attention as one the reader is attracted to this page, the smaller images show more of the content of the magazine. This means that the reader will then read through the contents to find certain article, and will come across more articles they wish to read.

The use of a border would benefit the magazine page because it will give the page even more of a structure. The border would consist of the colours from the colour scheme, this would direct more attention to some factors of the page. However, it shouldn't  go round all the page as it may make the page look smaller and less information would able to fit on it. It could only be included on one set of parallel sides.
But this technique of using a border is not necessary as it doesn't give information and doesn't grab as much attention as other techniques.

skeleton diagrams front cover

The first skeleton diagram of the magazine front cover includes a variety of techniques. I introduced a skyline to exhibit to the reader what is in the magazine, I like this technique because it gives additional information without crowding the main part of the cover, such as where the image is located. I have included a quote/lead article of the left side of the page so when the magazine is stacked on a shelf, it will still be visible to capture the public attention. Where as, if I put cover lines in its place, it would not be as effective because the writing would be to small to grab attention.
In all of the covers I have located the magazine title on top of the page because there is where the title is traditionally located, this means that my magazine would look professional; plus, it is then clear what the title of the magazine is.
A circular badge has been included to show additional information, although it is not as effective as a picture, it will still grab attention. The badge should be of a bright colour that reflects of the rest of the page to make it stand out, similar to the badge used in MOJO's front cover. I have included a smaller image, subtitle and text toward the bottom of the page to give other information so the reader is aware of what is in the magazine.

On the second skeleton diagram, I have pushed the main image toward the left side of the page. The effect of this is that the image is still visible when it is stacked on a shelf. Therefore, the image is still the most effective technique to grab the readers attention even when the whole cover is not visible. Also, I have put a quote in the middle of the page to introduce the image and label what the image is of. Also, a quote gives more detail about an article in the magazine. However, I have included three cover lines on the right hand side of the page so the page is not crowded. I have directed them towards the top so the bottom of the page doesn't look to busy, as this will put the reader off.
There is a badge included to give a burst of information to the reader, the effect of this is that it will grab the readers attention and give them an insight of what is included within the magazine. However, I did not include a skyline because I thought that a lot of information was already included and I don't think that the page would look appealing if too much writing is included.

With in the last magazine, I have put the main image is the centre of the page as it will be most eye catching in this position, therefore more people are likely to read the magazine, the magazine 'Classic Rock,' showed this to be effective. I have also included a skyline at the very top o the magazine to give additional information such as the magazine 'UNCUT' used. Also, this it a benefit to the magazine as, people normally look at the title of the magazine to judge the content, but when they look towards the title they will them see the skyline that will give them information.
